Offering, encouraging and teaching friendship in Christ to leaders in the business, political, arts and spiritual marketplaces.
“I’d be dead”
Asked about the prospects for his life if volunteers had not visited him in prison, the ex-offender replied, “The short answer is – I’d be dead.” It was at Prison Fellowship Scotland’s 30th Anniversary celebrations that this young man told his story of the transforming power of the loving presence of friends in his life.
It was a treat for me to offer words of reflection and encouragement to the board, staff, volunteers, a Chief Constable, prison governor, ex-offenders and folk on day passes. It takes all varieties of dedication and creative presence to serve in the world of criminal justice.
A couple of weeks earlier my family hosted a little celebration for my birthday. I wouldn’t say “I’d be dead” without family and friends. But my life has been enriched, disciplined, shaped and enlivened by the presence of people who love – I know that the love of those I can see and touch allows me to believe I am loved by the God I can’t see or touch.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, for friends and family whose love sustains – thank you. For opportunities to love and sustain others in their journey – thank you. Your divine power draws us to your love – thank you. For Jesus’ sake…
