“If all you knew about God was from your experience as a farmer, what’s your answer?” I asked a long time friend. “I am not in control” he answered quickly, with a smile. The longer I live the more that seems very true to me. We keep planting seeds in our personal, family and vocational lives and too often want to control the the results.

“As if” is Jesus’ smiling response. Life and its harvest is an emerging process. Whether we are awake or sleep, the seeds we plant sprout and grow and produce results – it’s the patience required to wait for the harvest that challenges us.

We have been given much in our lives, and it often seems that with so much going on we can’t handle it all. Jesus reminds us that the kingdom of God is within all this messiness and waiting – when I’m most out of control maybe I’m most hopeful.

A Prayer for Today

Loving God, this is your earth, and you’ve given me much seed to plant with my life today. Grant me patience with the natural processes of growth to trust you for the results. It’s your seed, your earth, my life is yours – let me be trustworthy in this all. For Jesus’ sake…
