“Open up-this is a raid”
Not words you want to hear – but instead of cops banging down the door it was Mavis Staples’ gentle gospel voice. She continued the song; “I wanna get through to you, you’re not alone”. It doesn’t happen often but as I sat in the concert I shivered gently each time she sang “you’re not alone.” It was a gentle “raid” to open me up. More >
Jesus Remember Me
“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” This lyric has run through my mind since I sang it in a Taize service last Wednesday evening. The voice of the thief on the cross speaks to me all these years later.
Quirky thought – he was the first to understand what was going on even before Jesus’ resurrection. He and Jesus died at similar times and if Jesus’ promise was right then they were together that day in eternity. Did he chat with Jesus about his impending resurrection and the unfolding connection of people who live in imitation of the crucified risen one? More >
What are We Really Afraid Of?
We sat around the dinner table quietly listening to Jesus’ comments about worry. One friend broke the silence saying, “none of us worry about food or clothes – I’m not sure this means anything to us today.”
“I worry about losing my reputation.” “I worry about becoming useless.” …. “about having a stroke.” …..“becoming dependent on others”….. and the list went on as others expressed what concerns us in the midst of our abundant economic circumstances. More >
