“Let’s stand together and sing that great worship chorus ‘I Am So Good’” announced the somewhat self-aggrandizing worship leader many years ago. When the audience burst out in raucous laughter, he still needed to be told that he meant to introduce “God is So Good”.

On a recent afternoon on my commute from our kitchen to my study, I was stopped in my tracks by a glow in the carpet. It was a beautiful rainbow rectangle not much bigger than my foot. It gave me a moment of awe and wonder - a trick of the angle of sunlight coming from my study window to the hallway carpet.

It’s quite a picture. Jesus, the Twelve and some women stopping from their travels for a meal. When the waiter arrives with the bill Mary or Joanna or Susanna say “I’ll take that” and pays it – for a circle that has seen the leader miraculously feed 5000. But out of their resources and with gratitude they supported his work.

Seven of us were doing a virtual retreat last week – 4 hours on Zoom with time off the screen for private prayer. The opening conversations included deep concern for the organizations we lead and for the pain we sense in our people. But we also shared the shadow we carry in our own lives.

In the wee hours of Sunday morning the “Fall Back” time fairy changed our clocks. You feeling slightly off? Or not happy about the decreasing daylight each day or wondering what restrictions our lives will experience over the uncertain days ahead?
