Temporary (two weeks later)
“Everything I have is temporary” was running through my mind ever since I wrote the thought entitled “Temporary” two weeks ago- the source kept eluding my recall. I found it last week in Mavis Staples’ song “God is not sleeping”.
“Everything I have is temporary….only love is necessary, everything I own is temporary….only God’s love is necessary” is the actual lyric. What we have and own is a mixture of the unseen and material. We have sorrow, fear, joy, success, loving and broken relationships, houses, investments, bank accounts and public personas – and all are temporary. But it sure doesn’t feel like it right now – some of it weighs heavily on us.
I’m shallow enough to be happy after a good golf shot and angry after a personal slight. Fear of the future triggers anxiety and a moment of comforting pleasure does the reverse – all temporary.
“Only God’s love is necessary” catches the real focus. In our temporary moments of joy or sorrow, success or failure, God invites us to relationship in the divine arms of love and true safety.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, my story joins with the stories of the many others reading this today. Some of us are up, some are down – but we share the same longing for your love. Help us today to find our identity in you and graciously fuel our passion for life with your love… For Jesus’ sake
