“Longing in my heart”
This line from an old Bonnie Raitt song was running through my alleged mind one morning last week. I’d finished my morning coffee with God and was puzzling over Jesus’ words “you’ll never be hungry or thirsty if you come to me”. (Norm’s loose translation)
I’ve got lots of “longings” in my life – being a follower of Jesus hasn’t removed them. Like most Canadians I like security, attention, useful work, friendship, food and drink, recognition, certainty, travel, a roof over my head. But those hungers can lead to envy, control, anger, greed, self-centredness – not very life-giving.
Jesus offers himself as life-giving food that moves us toward love, justice, mercy, care for the world. We become life giving people the more our “longing” is transformed from self-centred to life-giving.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, I am a jumble of hunger and thirst – some self-destructive and some destructive of others. But you know my deeper longing for nourishment from you – let me be life-giving in my world this week as I gain life from you. … For Jesus’ sake
