Offering, encouraging and teaching friendship in Christ to leaders in the business, political, arts and spiritual marketplaces.
Tennis with Jesus
That’s really the best way to describe my conversation with him the other day. “I am your servant” he said to his friends – and this is no rhetorical flourish. Jesus booked the room for his last dinner, arranged the catering, washed their feet, offered the blessing, opened and served the wine, presented the meal and nurtured the conversation.
Good friends, good work, family, community, resources, home – the list of ways God has served me is endless. Some days I resist his including me in the servant role. When I’d rather be served or see others pulling their share – my job is to do the mundane just as he did.
Serve, serve, serve – the language of tennis. So I batted the ball back over the net, and the game was on. “It’s your serve”. Serve and volley – I return service for service. The servanthood tennis game – I lose serve, miss my serve. But he always gives me a second serve.
I’m giving you your regular break from these little pieces and will return in the Fall – have a blessed summer and as you are served by God hear Jesus’ “It’s your serve.”
A Prayer for Today
Loving God, you’ve served me well – it seems a ridiculous idea, the God who serves. Let me express gratitude with the depth of my being and joyfully serve you and those you bring across my path. Thanks for giving me a second serve when I miss my first opportunity. For Jesus’ sake
