Scripture

‘I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.  But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.  He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.

 (John 16:12-14 NLT)

Info-glut

More information than we can possibly process comes at us every day. The beauty of a sunrise, the smile on a child’s face compete with a buzz on a device announcing an email, tweet, Facebook notification, LinkedIn update, Snapchat shot. Add to this whatever our work and responsibilities throw our way, the news of the day, our finances, our concern about politics, environment, poverty, health questions – and the beat goes on.

When I can’t think of an answer, I just Google it and I can quickly browse possible answers. But Google can’t help me integrate what I’m hearing and seeing into a coherent way to live with integrity, healthy relationships and purpose.

Jesus told his friends that even back in a simpler age they would have more information than they could bear. They needed help of a supernatural sort and Jesus was sending help in the person of the Spirit.

This is liberating. When we need truth appropriate for the moment, the Spirit can guide, select and remind us of what Jesus wants for us. If we are still enough to listen.

A Prayer for Today

O Spirit of Truth, steward of all that Jesus said and did and continues to say and do, let me be open to you. Let me hear you now, today, this week. So much competes for my attention. Let attention to grace, sacrifice, perseverance and truth about today win the competition ….. For Jesus’ sake
