Fuzzy Vision

Scripture

Then Jesus told them, ‘You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.  Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.’   (John 12:35-36 NIV))

Fuzzy Vision

A couple of weeks ago I got new glasses – nice frames and lenses that look and feel good, in my less than humble opinion. But as I tried to read, work on my computer and drive in the dusk they seemed fuzzy – not super bad but distracting.

My friendly optometrist had strengthened the prescription according to the readings on the various devices I submitted to at my appointment – but the readings didn’t work in practice. We resorted to checking my vision with hand held lenses and adjusting my glasses accordingly. They now still look good but now I actually see clearly.

We can have vision that is just slightly inaccurate as we view our world, as we try to understand the pain or failures of others and perhaps over value our own ability to clearly see what is right and wrong.

I use today’s prayer regularly with my retreats and I love the line “but that in your light we may see light clearly”. On a recent one day retreat at our place one of the guys focused on it for his personal time – and it was life giving.

A Prayer

Almighty God, in whom we live and move and have our being, you have made us for yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they rest in you; grant us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will, no weakness from doing it; but that in your light we may see light clearly, and in your service find our perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Augustine: 354-430)
