Sensing the Mystery in the Madness

December 2, 2019

 Scripture

He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. (John 1:2-5 NLT)

Sensing the Mystery in the Madness

We’re through Black Friday and now it’s “Cyber Monday”. Tomorrow is “Giving Tuesday” – probably so the retailers can give generously from the profits of the last few days. Or for charities like us to make everyone feel guilty enough to donate what remains on the credit line.

Maybe we should have “Amnesty Wednesday” – no advertising from TV or print – no Visa transactions – no web surfing – no curating ourselves on social media … the list could be endless of the addictive and assaultive stimuli confusing our minds.

We do need designated days that are different from these. Days that have moments of stillness, silence and reflection built in. An opportunity during these 23 days before Christmas to consider the mystery. The mystery that there is a light that truly shines to give hope to those who can’t afford the retail craziness, who can’t curate a perfect life and just long to be loved.

 A Prayer for Today

Loving God, you entered time in Jesus - in humility, poverty and anonymity. Grant us moments to connect with that humility and gentleness. It is a mystery that we can welcome you with open lives in this very moment, no one noticing but you. Help us serve you in the pain of our world that is under the surface of the celebrations and noise  …. For Jesus’ sake
