Living with the Uncertainty of Faith

Scripture

‘Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, “I am he,” and, “The time is near.” Do not follow them.  When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.’ …. He told them this parable: ‘Look at the fig-tree and all the trees.  When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.  Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

 (Luke 21:8-9, 29-31NIV)

Living with the Uncertainty of Faith

The lights on the tree flash their warmth and colour. The wreath over the fireplace sparkles as well. They promise hope and joy at Christmas. But my quick news survey shows: famine in Zimbabwe – more than 4 million needing food aid, hundreds killed in anti-government protests in Iraq and neighbouring Iran, thousands protesting in Hong Kong for democratic rights.  What do I do with this promise of hope? When will the outcome be positive and constructive?

When he was predicting the sacking of Jerusalem and its magnificent temple, Jesus was asked, “When shall these things be?” He talked about a list similar to mine above and said – “Don’t panic, God’s kingdom is near, but the end isn’t necessarily. He offered hope but not certainty about the details. I find this “kingdom is near” but not yet complete, a very uncertain space to live in.

God intervened in history in a quiet, humble and vulnerable way in a manger in Bethlehem. We await a grander intervention which will bring all of history to a climax of restoration and reconciliation. This season celebrates both Advents. Jesus continues as “God with us” encouraging us to trust him for the future but work with him to respond to the pain of the world now.

A Prayer for Today

Loving God, we share pain of people in our own lives, in our relationships and around the world. Our anxiety levels are often spiking. We live the tension between this celebratory, happy season and stark realities of suffering and pain. Grant us realistic peace to celebrate with your joy, which leads to loving service, compassion and generosity.…. For Jesus’ sake
